The Mississippi ICE raids expose the biggest problem with US immigration...

A Mississippi community is reeling from the aftermath of one of the largest worksite immigration raids in history. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers swept through seven chicken processing plants in the rural region of Morton Wednesday, arresting 680 suspected unauthorized workers. Dozens of children arrived home from school to find their parents gone. ICE says the operation was about enforcing US immigration laws that make it illegal for immigrants to work in the US without authorization. While it’s true that ICE officers with a warrant have the authority to raid workplaces, Wednesday’s operation sheds new light on the...

Report: we have to change how we use land and produce...

To combat climate change, we must make major changes to how we manage farmland, forests, and our own food, the United Nations said Thursday in a sprawling new report. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s special report on land, announced in Geneva, takes on two complicated questions: how land use contributes to climate change and how climate change affects land. Its scope is colossal: the 197 million square miles of land on Earth. The conclusions lay out a crucial paradox. Humans have harnessed land to develop into the complex, highly successful species we are today. But our destructive patterns of land...

Puerto Rico just kicked out another governor

Puerto Rico’s Supreme Court just booted out the man who declared himself governor on Friday, leaving the US territory leaderless as a constitutional crisis unfolds. In a unanimous ruling Wednesday, the court’s seven justices invalidated the swearing-in of Pedro Pierluisi, a lawyer and former politician whom former Gov. Ricardo Rosselló had nominated to replace him. Rosselló resigned after 12 days of anti-government protests in San Juan in response to corruption and social media scandals. Rosselló swore in Pierluisi before leaving office at 5 pm Friday, even though the Senate had yet to vote on his confirmation. That set up a battle...

Trump is visiting El Paso and Dayton. Some local officials aren’t...

One of the unwritten but traditional roles of the president is to act as a “consoler in chief” during moments of national tragedy. Donald Trump, however, isn’t a traditional president. On Wednesday, Trump is scheduled to travel to El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, two communities ravaged by mass shootings that happened on Saturday and Sunday and took the lives of 22 people and nine people, respectively. But whereas visits from previous presidents under such circumstances would typically be uncontroversial affairs, Trump’s is not. The White House so far hasn’t said much about what Trump plans to do in each city...

India’s risky Kashmir power grab, explained

India’s government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has made a controversial move to usurp power from the nation’s only Muslim-majority state, potentially igniting unrest in one of the world’s most dangerous nuclear flashpoints. On Monday, Indian Home Minister Amit Shah announced in Parliament that the government would scrap Article 370 of the Indian Constitution. Since 1949, that portion of the constitution has given near-autonomous authority to the state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), India’s side of the Pakistan-disputed Kashmir region, to conduct its own affairs. Basically, the state could mostly govern itself, except in some areas like foreign policy...

Here’s how Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and 8chan handle white supremacist content

In less than 24 hours on Saturday and Sunday, two mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, have left at least 29 people dead. The back-to-back massacres are raising questions about the role of social media platforms in spreading content that promotes violence and white supremacist ideologies. Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube have been slow to take action against white supremacist users and posts on their platforms, but over the past year, they finally began taking a series of actions and implementing some policy changes that target this kind of content. It doesn’t seem to be working yet....

Dayton, Ohio shooting: what we know

A gunman killed nine people and injured at least 27 in Dayton, Ohio’s Oregon Historic District shortly after 1 am ET Sunday. The attack was the US’s second mass shooting in 24 hours, following another mass shooting in El Paso, Texas. Police say the shooter, who they believe acted alone, is dead. The shooting took place on the sidewalks of the 400 block of East 5th Street in Dayton’s downtown, a historic and bustling part of the city that features bars and nightclubs. El Paso Walmart shooting: what we know

Police say one suspect is in custody after multiple people were shot, some fatally, inside a Walmart in El Paso, Texas on Saturday. At 11:03 am local time (1:03 pm EST) the El Paso Police Department tweeted that it was responding to an active shooter situation near the Cielo Vista Mall on the city’s east side. Video from local news station KTSM shows shoppers at the mall being evacuated. The Walmart is located in the mall complex, near the international airport and Biggs Army Airfield. CNN has reported that nearby businesses are on lockdown. The Washington Post reported that a town...
