“Reckoning” is an old English word with many different meanings. It’s the action or process of calculating; it’s a person’s view or opinion; and it’s a bill come due, with one of the synonyms for that definition being the arrival of retribution. It means, more precisely, “the avenging or punishing of past mistakes or misdeeds.”

Reckoning, in all these forms, has had a modern revival this year. No word better captures the state of mind for those in Big Tech, and more specifically Silicon Valley.

The 2019 Tonys were a damp end to one of the most exciting Broadway seasons in ages

It’s been a rough couple of years for the Tonys telecast. Traditionally, the award ceremony is powered by live performances from the year’s Best Musical nominees, but in the 2017 and 2018 seasons, the most exciting race was between the plays. The musicals were either exciting but under-rewarded (2017’s Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812), or there was a single beloved show in a crop of franchise-movie-to-franchise-musical adaptations (we do not speak of 2018).

That’s why at first, things looked bright for 2019’s 73rd annual Tony Awards.
