UK Increasingly Isolated as US Restricts Travel Due to Coronavirus

LONDON — It was one more reminder, delivered before dawn on Christmas morning, that Britain is not only an island nation, but one that finds itself increasingly alone.

A decision by the United States to require all airline passengers arriving from Britain to test negative for the coronavirus within 72 hours of their departure, starting on Monday, was not so much a shock as it was another bitter pill in a somber holiday season.

There is the fast spread of a coronavirus variant feared to be more contagious. Dozens of nations have barred travelers from Britain from entering. Expanded lockdowns

Robinhood’s 2020 Recaps Are a Meme for a Volatile Year

In 2020, wild fluctuations in the stock market caused by the pandemic turned millions of people into opportunistic investors. After stocks plunged in March, experienced traders and Nasdaq novices poured their dollars into buzzy tech companies like Tesla and Zoom, as well as businesses bludgeoned by Covid restrictions, including airlines, restaurants and cruises.

To reflect a year of volatility and impulsive investments, Robinhood, the popular trading app that has spurred controversy by marketing itself to young people, released a year-end data dump for its users. A news release promised that the Robinhood Recap would be a “special personalized experience that

Brexit Is Finally Done, but It Already Seems Out of Date

LONDON — It took 11 grueling months for negotiators from Britain and the European Union to hammer out the terms of a post-Brexit trade deal. But in many respects, the deal is already four and a half years out of date.

The world has changed radically since June 2016, when a narrow majority of people in Britain voted to leave the European Union, tempted by an argument that the country would prosper by throwing off the bureaucratic shackles of Brussels.

In those days, the vision of an agile, independent Britain — free to develop profitable, next-generation industries like artificial intelligence

Alex Trebek’s last episode of Jeopardy will now air in January

Alex Trebek’s last episode of Jeopardy will air on January 8, bringing the beloved host’s tenure on the iconic game show to an end after more than three decades.

Trebek was filming in the Jeopardy studio through late October, not long before his death at age 80 on November 8. Because the game show is produced with a relatively long lead time, new episodes featuring Trebek have continued to air posthumously. His final episode was originally slated to air on Christmas Day; however, the show is now closing out the year with “10 of his best episodes,” which kicked off …

Stella Tennant, Aristocratic Model, Is Dead at 50

Stella Tennant, the unimpeachably aristocratic model and inspiration to designers like Karl Lagerfeld and Gianni Versace, died on Tuesday in Duns, Scotland. She was 50.

Her death was announced by her family, which did not provide a cause. Police reports noted no suspicious circumstances surrounding her death, according to the BBC.

The granddaughter of Andrew Cavendish, the 11th Duke of Devonshire, and Deborah Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, the youngest of the Mitford sisters, Ms. Tennant was directly descended from Bess of Hardwick, builder of the opulent Elizabethan manor Hardwick Hall, who was once reputed to be the richest woman in

Fraser Island Fire Blamed on Campfire, Australian Official Say

MELBOURNE, Australia — Four people have been charged with unlawfully lighting a campfire that the authorities said sparked huge blazes on Fraser Island off the northeastern coast of Australia in October, ultimately razing more than 210,000 acres of the popular vacation spot.

A joint investigation between the local police and park rangers found that the men, aged between 21 and 24, lit an illegal fire at a campsite on Oct. 14. The authorities said that the fire then spread in a northwesterly direction, ravaging native vegetation and blackening more than half of the island, much of which is a national

Xin Xing, Giant Panda With Progeny Around the Globe, Dies at 38

There are 1,900 giant pandas in the wild, and 600 others are in zoos and breeding centers that seek to increase the population of the vulnerable species. China owns almost all the animals, including those born abroad to parents lent for a fee to foreign zoos.

At the Chongqing Zoo, Xin Xing lived a seemingly untroubled life, lounging in a bear-size pool in the summer and eating seven meals a day.

Her caretaker of 28 years, Zhang Naicheng, told China Daily in August, “When she was younger, she ate faster and much more than other pandas.”

The panda was also …

Frida Kahlo Never Slept Here

Ever wonder how Jimi Hendrix’s bedroom would look if he were alive today?

No? Well, one British company has reimagined it anyway, along with contemporary bedrooms for four other historical figures: William Shakespeare, Queen Elizabeth I, Coco Chanel and Frida Kahlo. Neville Johnson, which makes bespoke furniture and staircases, commissioned iProspect, a public relations and creative agency, to come up with the digital renderings, modeled by studying each individual’s style attributes and the homes he or she once occupied.

Mr. Hendrix, it appears, would fit right in with the recent boho interiors trend. His imagined bedroom is a kind of

E.U. Urges Member Countries to Lift U.K. Travel Bans

Britain and France reopened their border to some travelers on Tuesday and inched closer to a deal that would allow freight trucks to resume moving between the two countries, raising hopes of relief for hundreds of drivers stuck near British ports and for supermarkets warning that they could soon run short of fruit and vegetables.

On Sunday, France closed its border for 48 hours, fearing the spread of a new and possibly more transmissible variant of the coronavirus in Britain. That left more than 1,500 trucks stranded in the southeast as the Port of Dover and the Eurotunnel were shut
